Tribute Gifts in Memory of Lt Col Mark Davalos

Civil Air Patrol lost a good friend, mentor and example of the impact an organization can have on someone with the passing of Lieutenant Colonel Mark Davalos (1965 to 2021).  Mark was successful product of the CAP cadet program.  The skills he learned helped him succeed in the cadet program, college and beyond.

Mark inspired so many.  As a cadet he worked tirelessly to help others succeed while setting a high standard as a Spaatz cadet himself (#790).  And when he rejoined CAP as a senior member, his impact was even more profound.  He was a driven leader that worked endlessly to make sure cadets had an incredible experience in CAP.  When he rejoined, he hit the ground running, starting a new Squadron in Ann Arbor, Michigan, today one of the largest in the Wing.   He literally crossed the country to participate in, and help cadets get to, encampments, National Cadet Special Activities, and other activities whether in Michigan, Florida, or California.  As a result, his warmth, drive and understanding helped cadets around the country.

Lt Col Mark Davalos was born July 14, 1965, in Valparaiso, Indiana. Mark graduated with three degrees from the University of Michigan: a master’s in psychology, a bachelor’s in political science, and a bachelor's in psychology.

He joined CAP in 1979, he earned some of CAP's highest achievement awards including the Gill Robb Wilson, the Carl A. Spaatz Award (#790), and the Amelia Earhart Award (#916). In addition, he was recognized with many CAP awards including the multiple Exceptional Service Award and Meritorious Service Awards as well as National, Region, and Wing Commander Commendations, and a Lifesaving certificate. He was also recognized as the Michigan Wing and Great Lakes Cadet Programs Officer of Year.

Gifts made in honor of Mark’s legacy will be used to establish scholarships to support cadets participating in Civil Air Patrol programs, activities, and events.
